IKO: sustainable bituminous roofing systems for industrial buildings
For industrial buildings, the roof is much more than protection against the weather. It is an essential part of the building envelope and contributes to operational continuity, energy performance and the long-term resilience of production halls, warehouses, logistics centres and other commercial buildings.
IKO provides complete flat-roofing solutions, including bituminous roofing membranes, insulation, vapour control layers and technical support. Construction professionals can also rely on services such as building physics calculations, wind-load calculations, BIM objects and specification support.
Bituminous roofing systems are particularly well suited to the large and often intensively used roof areas of industrial buildings. They combine reliable waterproofing with a robust and versatile roof build-up. Depending on the project, the systems can be designed for mechanical fastening, ballasted installation or multi-layer applications.
Additional functions such as solar panels, rainwater recovery, vegetation and technical installations can also be incorporated into the roof concept from the design stage onwards.
Within this range, IKO atelia represents the next step towards circular construction. IKO atelia is a circular roofing concept that combines bituminous roofing membranes containing recycled raw materials with demountable roof build-ups.
Because the different roof components can be separated from one another, the materials remain more readily available for reuse and recycling at the end of their service life. The concept therefore considers not only how the roof performs today, but also the future value of the materials used.
IKO atelia’s sustainability ambitions are specific and measurable. All bituminous membranes in the atelia range contain more than 30% recycled materials. Certain underlays contain up to 50% recycled raw materials, while some cap sheets contain almost 40% recycled content.
These percentages have been independently verified in accordance with the international ISO 14021 standard. At the same time, the membranes retain their technical quality, reliability and performance.
IKO is also actively working to close the materials loop. At its factory in Antwerp, bituminous residues are processed into new raw materials for the production of high-quality roofing membranes.
Using IKO Orion recycling technology, these reprocessed materials can be efficiently reintegrated into the production process. Through initiatives for collecting bituminous membrane offcuts, IKO also promotes collaboration across the entire roofing industry.
The IKO atelia range includes solutions for both single-layer and multi-layer roof build-ups. Depending on the specific product, IKO base Atelia contains at least 35% to 50% recycled raw materials. The membranes are designed for use in circular roofing systems and are recyclable.
IKO powergum Atelia also combines recycled raw materials with the technical properties required for high-performance bituminous waterproofing. This cap sheet can be used on energy-generating roofs and is suitable for rainwater recovery.
For industrial building owners, architects, engineering consultancies and contractors, IKO atelia addresses several challenges at once. The system protects the building and the activities taking place inside it, while also supporting a forward-looking and sustainable use of the roof.
This may include installing solar panels, integrating technical equipment or preparing the roof for changing functions and future renovations. IKO atelia is also suitable for a variety of applications, including energy-generating and green roofs.
With IKO atelia, the industrial flat roof evolves from a traditional protective layer into an active component of sustainable and circular construction. Reliable bituminous technology is combined with recycled raw materials, demountable roof build-ups and a focus on the building’s entire life cycle.
