APM Terminals Maasvlakte II, Embotech and Terberg are expanding Europes largest autonomous terminal tractor fleet. 5 new electric ATTs have been added, bringing the fleet to ten, with a total of 30 vehicles planned for fully automated container transport.

APM Terminals Maasvlakte II, in collaboration with Embotech and Terberg Special Vehicles, has commissioned five additional electric Autonomous Terminal Tractors (ATTs), bringing the operational fleet to ten vehicles. This marks another important milestone in the rollout of automated container transport at the Rotterdam terminal. The partners are working towards a fleet of 30 autonomous electric tractors, which is expected to become the largest deployment of its kind in Europe.

The newly delivered vehicles have successfully completed their Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and will begin Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) at Maasvlakte II in the coming months. This follows the successful validation of the first five ATTs, which demonstrated reliable performance in real-world mixed-traffic terminal operations. Testing included lane changes, manoeuvring in narrow lanes, reverse parking at transfer points and endurance testing, confirming the system’s reliability in a controlled operational environment.

Built on Terberg’s electric terminal tractor platform, the vehicles are equipped with Embotech’s Level 4 autonomous driving technology, enabling precise navigation, centimetre-level path planning and robust obstacle detection in all weather and lighting conditions. The autonomous solution has also received TÜV SÜD safety certification and CE marking, confirming compliance with European regulations for autonomous terminal tractors.

Once the full fleet is deployed, the ATTs will transport containers between the Automated Rail Mounted Gantry (ARMG) cranes and the rail terminal, seamlessly integrating with existing terminal equipment. This phased implementation supports APM Terminals Maasvlakte II’s long-term capacity expansion while ensuring reliability, safety and efficient day-to-day operations through a structured testing and certification process.
