Only 30% of berths have shore power: floating batteries offer an alternative for emission-free inland shipping.

Grid congestion and infrastructure limitations are slowing down the rollout of shore power in Flanders. The VIL project Floating Battery reveals that currently only 30% of berths are suitable for fixed shore power. As a result, a large proportion of inland shipping remains dependent on fossil fuels during mooring and waiting periods. According to the final report, floating batteries offer a flexible and sustainable alternative, enabling inland vessels to be supplied with electricity even at locations where no shore power infrastructure is available.

The project, carried out by VIL in collaboration with knowledge partner Sirris and a broad group of companies from the logistics, maritime, and energy sectors, confirms that the technology is already available today.

At the same time, the concept requires further refinement and coordination within the sector to enable large-scale rollout. Key areas of focus remain the initial investment cost, operational organization, and the need for an adapted regulatory framework. Further coordination is also required regarding safety, certification, and insurability.
